چکیده
Abstract Background Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea usually presents as unilateral clear thin nasal drainage, is caused by a direct communication from the subarachnoid space to sinonasal cavities and can lead intracranial infection, pneumocephalus, or death. Diagnosing CSF be challenging. While gold standard for leak confirmation surgical exploration, testing beta-2 transferrin (B2Tf) via agarose gel electrophoresis followed immunofixation (AGEI) remains initial non-invasive confirmatory test of choice. However, AGEI requires subjective interpretation immune-stained protein bands. Multiple studies have reported high sensitivity specificity B2Tf (90–100%), but other shown wider ranges 70–100%. Due small sample sizes methodologic differences between studies, comparing results problematic. The purpose this study was assess in confirming excluding patients with determine inter-reviewer variability interpretation. Methods This retrospective observational who had performed on their drainage 2020 through 2022. Rapid method for beta2-transferrin in cerebrospinal fluid leakage using an automated immunofixation electrophoresis system.
BACKGROUND Beta(2)-transferrin (beta-2 trf) is a desialated isoform of transferrin found only in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), ocular fluids, and perilymph. In aural, nasal, and wound drainages, this protein is an important marker of CSF leakage. Immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) on agarose gels is a widely accepted qualitative technique for detection of small amounts of beta-2 trf, but disadva...

BACKGROUND Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage is a critical condition with a substantial risk of meningitis. We investigated the use of transferrin isoform analysis as a diagnostic marker for detection of CSF leakage in fluid samples. METHODS We analyzed 241 samples from patients with CSF leakage, most commonly presenting as otorrhea or rhinorrhea, by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel ...
متن کاملA comparison of cellulose acetate immunofixation with polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for the detection of oligoclonal bands in unconcentrated cerebrospinal fluid.
Two methods of electrophoresis for the detection of oligoclonal bands in unconcentrated CSF were compared. A sample of 98 routine CSFs yielded 18 positives by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) while cellulose acetate electrophoresis with immunofixation (CAIF) gave 13 positives (72% of the PAGE findings). Despite the loss of sensitivity the cellulose acetate electrophoresis was easier to...

This article discusses the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of traumatic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks. An overview of traumatic CSF leaks is presented, and both conservative and operative therapies are reviewed. Management decisions are discussed based on the current literature. Controversial clinical topics are addressed, including the use of prophylactic antibiotics and the timing o...

II. OVERVIEW By definition, PBI violates the subarachnoid space and creates a potential CSF leak. In addition to leakage from entry or exit sites, a fistula may occur at a remote site because of skull fracture and a dural tear from a blowout mechanism. High-velocity missiles may create transients of extremely high intracranial pressure, which can produce fractures even in the base of the skull....
